Plantar Fasciitis: A Real Pain in the Foot

How to Treat Plantar Fasciitis

The good news is that plantar fasciitis can often be managed without surgery. Early treatment is key to preventing long-term pain. Here are some effective strategies:

Stretching: Stretching your calf muscles and Achilles tendon can reduce tension on the plantar fascia. A simple wall stretch or rolling your foot over a frozen water bottle can help.

Footwear Adjustments: Wearing supportive shoes or using orthotic inserts can provide cushioning and arch support.

Ice and Anti-Inflammatory Medications: Icing the affected area and taking over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen, can help reduce pain and inflammation.

Physical Therapy: For persistent pain, physical therapy can improve foot mechanics, strengthen muscles and address any underlying issues contributing to the condition.

“In many cases, a good stretching regimen can prevent plantar fasciitis from developing in the first place,” says Dikis. “For runners and athletes, prevention is always the main goal.”
